Fall 2015 December 5 Friday (Gone to Memphis)

57 degrees this morning, one earthquake  (no walk)

Electricity went off last night, no internet at time this is written.  Hopefully they will reset their modem shortly.

Atlanta airport may be the “busiest airport” in the world, and it is also one of the worst.  In bathrooms, no water, soap or towels available.  Seems they should be used to the traffic enough to keep up with it on a relatively light day.

Missed connection due to a problem with the “gate” that swings out to the plane, a sign of lack of maintenance and concern by the airport.

Only thing we can try to do is avoid Atlanta airport in the future, which we already try to do anyway.

Strange to come into Memphis as a complete guest.  Fit into the old patterns easily (eating, shopping etc.), but know this is for a short visit, kind of like our visits used to be to OKC.

We did have a very nice visit with friends last night and plan many more while here.

At least the Memphis airport had water, soap and towels in the restrooms and everything works.

I don’t know who planned the rental car area here (it is about a mile walk), but they should be fired for complete lack of concern for the customers.  All other airports either have rental car shuttles or the rental cars are right next to the airport.

I really wander what they were thinking.  They have all kinds of taxes on  rental cars for projects that the community doesn’t want to pay for, such as conference centers, stadiums etc.  (all cities do this unfortunately), but they can’t even pay for decent rental car facility access.  I really don’t know how people with problems walking even get to the rental car facility.

The Memphis rental car facility (which is almost brand new!) is another example of “what in the world were they thinking”.  No wonder Memphis lost it’s status as a “hub” with fuzzy thinking like that.

Electric outage shows  how dependent we are on electricity.  If it goes, we lost all our connectively, our heat/cooling, cooking, etc.  Make you want to install a big backup, but then you have to depend on gas or whatever to power that.

There is really no alternative to a long term electric outage (other than move).

The “Cloud” etc. doesn’t mean a lot if you don’t have electricity.

Spending the travel time to catch up on some completely escapist reading.  It is fun!

I guess I have finally given in and admit that “e-books” make a lot more sense in some cases, especially when traveling.  You have access to a lot of books without having to carry a lot.

It is especially convenient since airlines (at least Delta) have started allowing iPads etc. to be used all the time, and iPhones to be on (with the “Airplane”mode on) at all times during the flight.

Upgraded  to a mini suite at the hotel, which is nice.

That’s it for now, Friday, December 5, 2014.
