78 degrees this morning, 77% humidity wind 16 mph

Yesterday was another odd day, high wind most of day, 20+mph, which is kind of high, even for around here.  High of 93 degrees, sunny most of day.  Supposed to be a high of 100 degrees today.

Sitting on the patio, with a relatively high wind.  A very obnoxious bird was “singing”.  Fortunately it has stopped.

Didn’t walk yesterday due to schedule.

2020 is half over.  I would say “thank goodness," but I wonder what the second half will be like.

I finally got a refund on the book I ordered.  I had ordered it, they gave me a shipping date and then sold the last one supposedly.  I was supposed to get a refund, but finally had to e-mail and ask.  In all fairness, the refund appeared that night.

Now I need to find the book again, it is out of print, but I’ll keep looking for it.

One of the reasons I found it so easy to “weed” my books , etc., is the thought I can “always order a copy over the internet”.  Unfortunately, “The Long Tail” isn’t always true, although it is very rare I can’t find a book I want.  Eventually I will find it.

Another experience at the “quarantine life," Sunday we went to pick up our “contactless” pickup of groceries.  Just by chance, we checked for an item after they put the items in the trunk and noticed they hadn’t delivered it!  No big deal, except that we waited about 30 minutes to get the item and then we noticed a 2nd item hadn’t been delivered!  2 items out of 12 is quite a bit.

Before, we just wrote it off, but this time we happened to notice it while we were there because it was an item we were going to take to someone.  We got a $20 gift card for our “trouble," but so what?   We appreciated the gesture, but we will be standing (with our mask and our list) to make sure everything is delivered in the future!  What bothered us was the uncaring attitude of resolving the problem.

Got our sprinkler system fixed today.  We discovered the contractor who fixed a small retaining wall apparently broke the pipe and kindly shut off that valve so we wouldn’t find our about it or have to “worry” about it until it was time to turn the sprinkler on! Also “saved” the cost of fixing his error!

As I mentioned before, I don’t like to waste water on grass that simply wants to be brown, not green!  If I were talented that way, I would try to have an indigenous yard without having to water , etc.

I try to remember when we started watering the yard each year, I think one year we made it to July 10, so this isn’t the latest we have started sprinkling the yard.

The “quarantine” beard and hair will probably be trimmed this week, or next week. On the other hand, I’m not sure if I’m ready to go the barber yet and expose myself to the virus.  I actually like the beard and “long” (so to speak) hair.

The barber herself I trust to keep things as clean as possible, but you never know who is or was there who feel they are invincible and won’t get the virus.

Having some really wild dreams, but I don’t remember them when I wake up, at least not long enough to write them down.  I understand since the virus started this has been more common.

That’s it for now, Tuesday, June 30, 2020.

76 degrees this mornin 86% humidity, wind 20 mph

Yesterday was another unusual day, although the dust seemed to be a little less.Windy, mostly with sun although cloudy at times.High was 89 degrees.

The day was just a little murky and weird, but less so than Saturday.    In additional to the clouds there were times when it looked like it was going to rain.

Had a chance to go swimming in an outdoor pool (with social distancing of course) which was fun.

Monday of a 4-day week, with a Friday holiday!  That is always a little unusual.  I always look forward to a holiday and especially a 3 day weekend!

This weekend will be a little more special since Formula 1 racing will resume.  Several years ago Formula 1 became my favorite race series. I actually went to one (qualifying only) in Austin, Texas several years ago (in conjunction with a conference).  It was truly amazing, and I have been trying to figure out how to get back to a full race sometime. Not likely this year unless the pandemic suddenly improves.

Weights yesterday morning, sit-ups, barbells, bench press.

Walk, 23:45 minutes, 22 seconds slower than my goal.
Cool down walk 13:16 minutes.

The novel “Clean Hands” is developing a life of its own after somewhat of a slow start.  I am intrigued now!

In the story one of the characters is more or less blackmailed to  performing  major crime on the basis that the criminals had placed evidence of a crime on his computer and they advised even if he could prove he was innocent, the publicity would destroy his career and reputation.

I always wondered about that, because I is true that in many cases merely the accusation is enough to destroy even a totally innocent person.

Anyway, that is one of the plots of the book, although it actually is just the way they get the attorney to cooperate to start off a series of crimes and underhanded actions.

Another victim(s) of the Pandemic Is children birthdays, graduations an similar rituals (even funerals and weddings).  It is sad to have to substitute a “drive by parade” for a child’s birthday, although they seem to adjust to it well.

When I watch a tv show or a series and see people shaking hands , etc., I think what a world of difference 5 months makes.  Now it looks strange t see people shaking hands, hugging , etc., or not wearing masks!  Hopefully something will be resolved soon and it will seem “normal” again to shake hands , etc., although unfortunately even if the pandemic disappears I probably always will hesitate a little before shaking hands.

That’s it for now, Monday, June 29, 2020.

76 degrees this morning 75% humidity Wind 16 mph

Strange day yesterday, warm (high of 92), sunny, but I think the big dust cloud was affecting our area.  There was a strange haze all day, even though no rain was forecast.
Sitting out on he patio this morning, with is relatively high wind of  16 mph, don’t know if the dust is still in the air (still dark).

Years ago, in Liberal, Kansas, I was in a true dust storm (red dust yet).  It literally got into everything. They used to say “Liberal wasn’t the end of he world, but you can see it from there”.  Actually, I enjoyed my time in Liberal, it was a unique city.

Sat on the patio both before and after my nap yesterday morning.

Walk yesterday, 24:35 minutes, pace 40 seconds slower than my goal
Cool down walk 13:25 minutes

Hopefully the dust won’t affect me and start me coughing, if it does, I’ll need to stop walking until it’s out of the air.

Finished  the book by Robert Iger,  “The Ride of a Lifetime” yesterday morning.  It was an interesting book, I don’t think I really thought what all went into locating a Disneyland in China (or internationally anywhere).  Also his description of what all was involved in one company acquiring another and the his process of being selected for CEO  was amazing.

Starting another book, Patrick Hoffman, “Clean Hands”.  I’ve not into it enough yet I know if I will finish it or not.  I like to give a book a chance, but also not waste my time.

I have an calendar book  that I got Christmas 1989 that I have noted every book I read during the last 31 years.   It has the month and day but not the year.    I was going to “retire” it last Christmas, I kind of thought 30 years was enough, but I kept on noting my books in the book since I didn’t have a replacement.

It is interesting to see the books I have read, and when I read them.  Actually it amazes me when I realize how long ago I read some of the books.  What I enjoy is when I read them it brings back memories of when I read the book, not just the book, but where I was at the time and the frame of mind at the time.

Kind of like a journal entry, a phrase, even just a word or a place can jog your memory and take you back to that time and place.

The virus numbers keep on increasing.  Ignorance of the numbers by not doing testing is hardly going to help.

I wonder how the quarantine/virus will affect people like my Granddaughter who will never have a real High School graduation ceremony or closure to high school, can’t get a job (under 18) and can’t get her Drivers License since everything is closed down.

I can remember when I was that age and the sense of my life being on “pause” for months, who knows how long, would be frustrating.  It is even worse because  there many not be an end.  Kind of like the Vietnam War, you knew it would end, you just don’t know when or how.

The experience does have a sense of “waiting” of some kind of unreality that is still reality.

That’s it for now, Sunday, June 28, 2020.

76 degrees this morning, 74% humidity wind 14 mph

Another wonderful day yesterday, a little windy.  94 degrees high.  Great patio weather both before and after my nap yesterday morning.  May have to try to take my nap on the patio!

Sitting on the patio this morning, the wind is up, one of those windy summer mornings where you can hear the wind, kind of like a Summer evening when the wind is up a little, but not enough to be obnoxious.

Reminds of an evening when I was in high school when we climbed on the roof of the school.  Don’t know why, but every time the wind blows like this in the dark I think of it.  No, we didn’t get caught!

Walk:  yesterday 24:r48 minutes, pace was 58 seconds slower than my goal.  Probably not bad considering the muggy weather.

Listening to the “Great Course” about the civil war.  It is interesting and brings up some aspects I haven’t heard or considered before.  I know a lot of it, but it is always interesting to hear new viewpoints and information.

Didn’t see any geese today, I guess they were at another pond.

Read recently about “Covid15," which is the weight people put on from the lack of exercise and eating more food during the quarantine period.  Unfortunately it is not “when” it is “still” going on.

Anyway, clothing stores have noticed customers ordering larger sizes , etc.  I’m a little worried about getting into my work clothes when I go back “in the field” again!

Ever since my Doctor called my attention to it about it about a month ago,  I have been using “My Fittness Pal” to monitor my food intake, exercise, even keep my consumption of water.  I have actually been diligent about recording my food intake, exercise , etc.

So far, the pounds haven’t exactly melted off, but at least they are going down bit by
bit. It seems like it would be faster.  Occasionally I have a disgusting uptick.

At least the “My Fittness Pal” makes me think about the food I eat, even if I get the quantity wrong!

Actually, getting the quantity wrong is probably the major reasons for not being able to  maintain or lose weight!.  I actually have a set of food scales which can be helpful.

I tried to measure how much peanut butter, cheese spread and strawberry jam I really eat, but it I can still vary.

As far as measuring what I eat, I don’t really try to be all that accurate, just so I get a trend.

Maybe a good way to live your life, measure it in trends instead of letting any one aspect become too important.  I used to say “in five years no one will care about this” (or 30 days or a 100 years).  Looking back I can see I was correct, it is easy to overemphasize the minor parts of life and overlook the overall trend of your life.

Anyway, right now the overall trend of my weight is down, and hopefully that will continue!

Right now I am probably looking at about 2 weeks before I go “in the field” again, so hopefully I can lose enough to fit some clothes!  (I haven’t tried, so I really don’t know, I’ll let it be a surprise.

Although the way the virus is going, I may be “quarantining”  for some time yet!

Start of another weekend, I do love the weekends, especially in the Summer where I can enjoy just sitting outside feeling the wind nd the heat.

71 degrees this morning  91% humidity wind 9 mph

Weights:  Sit-ups, bar bells, bench press yesterday morning

Again, another excellent day yesterday.  Able to sit on the patio when I first got up and after my nap, able to read and then eat breakfast on the patio.  I keep thinking I need to move my office to the patio at least in the morning, but there are some drawbacks (birds, mowers and especially the wind), as well as limited access to my files , etc.

Also, I love my office, I have a good view of the neighborhood, trees , etc.

Sitting on the patio this morning writing this, a light wind, the wind is a big factor in how comfortable it is.

Getting ready for recycling day, did one of my favorite tasks, tearing down some cardboard boxes.  There is something enjoyable about it.  I won’t say therapeutic!

As far as I know I developed a liking for tearing down cardboard boxes at a job I had in graduate school.  I finally realized I couldn’t work a job like that and finish graduate school in the time I wanted. I wanted to (and did) finish in one year.  I was ready to get to work.

I think they had to break the boxes down keep their trash rates low since they were charged on a volume basis.

I finally had to quit the job due to time and it was costing a lot to drive to it.  I did see my first “luxury” toilet lids.   One was a “see through” lid with real money embedded in it.  I’m not sure if I was surprised of dismayed that someone would pay over $140 for a lid!  There were actually others more expensive. This was in the mid 1970s so that wasn’t cheap.

I was in Wichita several years ago and I thought about going by and seeing what they had!  (If they were even still open.)  It made quite an impression on me!

Something got me liking cutting boxes apart and I have enjoyed doing it through the years.   The tougher the box, the more I enjoy it!

Glad today is Friday.  As I mentioned before, for some reason I thought it was Thursday all week!

I believe I feel disoriented anyway, not having the normal summer activities

Just saw a story last night about restaurants using sidewalks, parking lots , etc., as “patio seating”.  I’m all for it.  Maybe not as good as the patio in back of my  house but still nice and healthy!  Unfortunately the times when it is nice enough on most sidewalks , etc., to be nice in the Summer are limited here.

We actually did eat in a restaurant the other day, on a patio where we were the only ones sitting in the patio.  Probably the last time fo while, hopefully not another 3 1/2 months.

As I have noted, we had assumed we would be eating out, shopping and visiting with family members , etc., by now.  Instead, we are watching  in horror (or disgust) as the infection rates are higher than when it first started.

That’s it for now, Friday, June 26, 2020.

71 degrees this morning 70% humidity

Yesterday started off at 62 degrees.  Didn’t even think about sitting on the patio (too cool) until after my nap and found out it wan’t that bad, so I enjoyed reading and eating breakfast on the patio.  I think the only reason it was enjoyable at the temperature was there was no wind. Temperature yesterday was a high of 90 degrees.

Walk yesterday 24:41 minutes, pace was one minute and two-seconds slower than my goal.

For some reason I have been thinking it was Thursday every day this week, even on Tuesday, so at least it finally is Thursday!

I ordered a book recently (on Amazon) that they said was being shipped. This wasn’t a “prime” item, it was a private book store on Amazon, so the shipping time was several weeks anyway. Then I got an e-mail saying that they had sold the “last copy” and they were refunding my money.  However, I kept getting e-mails saying my book was coming, giving dates , etc.

The last date it was supposed to arrive was June 23, so I guess I can safety reorder it.  I need to check and see if my refund is there which should confirm it!  I just checked and I haven’t gotten a refund yet, so it may be coming yet.

Reading “The Ride of a Lifetime” by the Robert Iger  CEO (past now) of Disney. He’s a good story-teller, he pulled me in while I was still debating if I wanted to read the book!  I really wonder how someone developed into that type of position, I assume highly skilled as well as some luck and a lot of motivation and hard work.

The book is a prime example of how there are key decisions can change your life and sometimes what seems bad is actually good!   While he doesn’t go into detail, it really emphasized the complexity of the productions that make up tv , etc.

He started first in sports and then moved to the entertainment side of ABC, so the look hasn’t gotten significantly into Disney.

I have actually only been to a Disneyland one time, in California. I’m  not really much of a entertainment park person although there have been times I have enjoyed it.

My “virus beard”  and “virus hair” may get much worse if the virus keeps spiking!  I was generally thinking of getting a hair cut (the first in 4 months) in early July and trim my beard, but with the number of “new cases”  of virus in this state each day, I think I’ll stay safe some more!  It was a shock to see the spike in new cases, but I guess in a way it was what was expected.

I heard yesterday it is as hight as it’s ever been in some states.  Scary.

Bit the bullet and ordered a new wifi router yesterday, hopefully it will provide better wifi service in our house.  It isn’t  really bad, just some dead spots that are frustrating.
I’m hoping the capacity to “channel wifi” to where you want it will be helpful.  As you can tell, I don’t really understand it but I hope it will help!

Primary Election is coming up here next week.  As I mentioned we voted by “absentee ballot” and are now wondering how we know if our vote is counted.  Due to our legislature the rules are so confusing there is probably all kinds of reasons they can find to void your absentee ballot.  On the other hand, what else is new?

That’s it for now, Thursday, June 25, 2020.

63 degrees this morning 80%  humidity

Yesterday was another wonderful day, high of 86 degrees.  Sat on patio in morning, always a good way to start of day!  Didn’t sit on patio this morning at 63 degrees, although it may be better later.

Walk 25:22 minutes, 59 seconds slower than goal.

I did stop to try to get a picture of the albino goose, but couldn’t get a clear picture of it.

Saw a story today (on the internet, but a reasonably credible one), about finding an area in Argentina I believe, where there was evidence of armadillo shells indicating that there existed at one time “armadillos the size of Volkswagens," at least in some areas of the earth.

If you think about the idea of Armadillos the size of Volkswagens, that is almost as scary as the virus, depending on how fast they can move , etc., and, perhaps, if they eat people!

On the other hand, maybe they were a good source of food.

The virus “surge” is rapidly reaching the point where it started last February/March.  While I don’t like not being able to visit family, go to activities, etc., it is better than taking a chance of getting the virus.

While I thought when this started it was for a month, two months at most, now my time frame is longer, and I hope I am wrong.

Somehow, life has developed a life of its own and I get used to it.  I really do hope I’m not expected to go “in the field” July 1.  Even with the PPE, the chance of getting the virus just isn’t worth it.

Our “robot vacuum” developed a problem with the “bumper”.  I just figured it was “live and learn," but to my amazement the company sent a new one.  Overnight yet.  I am impressed.

I have learned I need to barricade the cleaner some, and I will probably by one with a “fence” in the future.

It actually works reasonably well, and I have a lot of fun watching it!  I looked at Consumer Reports and the best was actually the cheapest, although it is missing a few features (such as the fence) that would be nice.

I’m still dithering about the security system, but since the one we have works, I probably will stick with one we got.  However, I am going to try a better router and hope it resolves our Wi fi problems we have.

The tests I had the other morning came back “ok”.  Even though I tell myself I “want to know” if something is wrong, it is still nice to “pass” the test so to speak!

Wednesday, work week is almost half over. Then next week is a 4 day week, although of course July 4 means the Summer is half over, at least on a “normal” summer.  I expect this will be a very unusual July 4th.

That’s it for now, Wednesday, June 24, 2020.

73n degrees this morning, 81% humidity

Yesterday started with what I always dislike, a “fast” until after some medical tests.  In this case no food or water. I always figure I’ll get real thirsty or hungry, so I normally eat and drink water late enough to survive.  Fortunately I did ok yesterday morning and didn’t get too hungry or thirsty.   I think by the time it actually happens, I just decide I have to live with it, so no use complaining!

The day was an excellent day, high of 92 degrees, sunny with little wind.

Sitting on the patio this morning, the forecast had been for rain and thunderstorms which haven’t arrived (yet).  Every day I get to sit on the patio in the morning I consider another present.

Finished “The Good Marriage”.  It was actually one of the more “hard to put down” books I’ve read for a while. I finished it early in the evening which is good, since it is one of those books that I would stay up late to finish!

I really don’t know what makes a book so interesting and another one not, but to me this book was great.  It was definitely fiction and definitely one that you have to like fiction that I think they categorize as “mysteries” or “thrillers”.

Saw something unusual during my walk today, an albino goose.  I had seen it at distance before and it looked like it was a cross between a goose and a chicken, but I saw it close today and it was an albino goose.  It had white feathers, a pink head , etc., and probably pink eyes.

I thought about getting a picture of it, but I didn’t want to slow my pace on my walk!  I think the next time, I will stop and take a picture.

We always call them “big boys," but I think they are Canadian geese.  I’d never heard of an albino goose, but now I saw one.

The geese gather on two ponds, or rather a pond intersected by a street and a sidewalk.  They usually don’t poop on the sidewalk, but sometimes they do (a lot for some reason) and then it makes walking down the sidewalk very interesting!

Walk today was 23:44 minutes and only 4 seconds slower than my goal.  I wasn’t even aware I was walking that fast until I finished.

My next book is going to be non-fiction, Robert Iger, “The Ride of a Lifetime” (CEO of Disney who resigned just recently).  I just checked it out of the library.

The virus outbreak keeps going higher recently.  Whether it is a “second wave” or “first wave” is rather meaningless.  You just don’t want it.

Actually I only know one person who (actually two, a husband and wife) have had it and it was horrible in their case.  It just depleted any energy they had and they are still not even close to full strength even though they caught it  the first part of April.  It could have been worse, which makes it even more scary.  I believe the national deaths just topped over 120,000 that can be attributed to the virus, probably a lot more that weren’t counted.

When I start to think about wanting to eat out, travel , etc., I just think of the quote “One moment of patience may ward off great disaster. One moment of impatience may ruin a whole life."  All it takes is one mistake to get the virus  I can wait.

That’s it for now, Tuesday, June 23, 2020.

65 degrees this morning 90% humidity,

Yesterday was unusual, sat on the patio and wrote in the journal at 74 degree, very nice weather.  Went up to take a nap and when I woke, it was pouring rain, no more patio!  Actually it did clear off after that and became a relatively nice day, high of 87 degrees.

Heavy rain during night plus 65 degrees tis morning so no patio this morning!

Have some tests this morning so I had to”fast” and not drink anything after midnight, which I hate.  That is why I always schedule such tests early in the morning!

Walk:  24:21 minutes, pace was 34 seconds slower than my goal
Cool-down walk:  14:38 minutes

We are learning some limitations to the “on-line” way of living.  Friday we ordered some groceries , etc., for “contactless pickup” on Saturday.  We are normally notified, so the time came and went and we actually went out and called.   Apparently all of the stores, nationwide, had the network crash and they couldn’t even look up our order.

It was actually available Sunday morning, (It was supposed to be available Saturday), so it wasn’t a big deal.  I got a text it was ready and everything went smoothly.  The name of the company isn’t important, it could happen to any store.

Most of the time, the on-line ordering goes well, one store we got some poor quality vegetables, so we just didn’t order there anymore.  It may have been the “shopper," but we figure they shouldn’t have poor quality vegetables in the first place.

Overall, we have been very pleased with the “on-line’ grocery pickup/delivery, although I actually would prefer the “personal” shopping.  (It is easy to forget something and then you can’t change your order , etc.)

The “spike” in the virus is scary, it looks like it will be back al least as bad as when it first started, if not worse.

We, I assume, canceled a family reunion yesterday for late July  (I assume will do it by teleconference).  Two weeks or at least on June 1, I really thought we had a chance of making it.

Looks like the “reboot” of sports won’t start (shortened MLB and NBL seasons) and I expect the NFL and the fall college sports will be canceled also.

We had several trips planned (fortunately just in concept) that we figure won’t happen.  It is going to be a Summer with no Summer activities.

I am rethinking my dental appointment (just the six month checkup) in 3 weeks and my first haircut in 3 1/2 months may have to wait another month or two.

As I mentioned, we just aren’t going to take a chance.

Watched a  “Frontline” program on the development of the virus. Scary.

On the good side, I had a wonderful “Father’s Day” even though we stayed in the house.  Aliene made her wonderful meat loaf, which means I get to have meat loaf both today and throughout the week!

Of course, after every weekend comes a Monday, which is today!

74 degrees this morning 80% humidity

Summer is here!  Not sure if yesterday or today is the “longest” day.  As I have mentioned, the problem now is the days only get shorter until next year!

Weights, Sit-ups, barbells, bench press

Yesterday started off cool, (65 degrees at one time), but heated up to 91 degrees. Little wind.

Didn’t sit on the patio yesterday morning, temperature around 65 degrees.  Surprised later to find it wasn’t that cold, but this was after sun rise.  74 degrees this morning with no wind is excellent on the patio.

Walk:  24:13 minutes, pace was 38 seconds slower than my goal
Cool-down walk:  13:45 minutes

Voted absentee ballot today.  Very disappointed with the confusing instructions , etc.  Plus the only way we knew that 2 stamps were required was that someone called and told us.

What happened was that the state Supreme Court invalidated the absentee ballot procedure as unconstitutional, so the legislature met the next day and passed some really confusing rules, of course signed by the governor, who hopes to restrict voting.

I remember when I took “civics” courses, the emphasis was on everyone having the ability to vote that they wanted too. Instead, polling places are restricted in some areas and absentee balloting is made unnecessarily complicated.  I believe they even made it worse for the general election and are requiring a notary public, which really just kills absentee voting.

The dark side of politics that used to not be part of the Political Science  courses.  I think they include more of it now.

We decided to go ahead and absentee vote since the way the virus is “spiking” now,  who knows, there may not even be any open polls by the election date.

Just heard that the virus cases In this state have spiked 158% in the past week or so.   Who knows how long it will continue.   Whatever it takes, we will continue to do whatever is necessary to avoid getting the virus.

I was surprised that my hair is curly.  It has been over 3 months since I had a haircut and the longish parts of my hair are curly.  (It has actually always been that way, I just forgot or have rarely had it this long before.) As I mentioned, before, my head hair (what there is) is so wispy and my beard hair so heavy and thick, it is like my head hair and my beard hair belong to different people.

I haven’t decided when I’m going to take a chance and get a haircut and beard trim.  I am probably starting to look like a wild man!  Actually I kind of like my hair long and I may just get it trimmed.  A lot will depend on when I have to go “in the field” again. Actually, hew have seen my face or hair since March 15, when I am out, I usually have a   mask on.

I used to think when I got “old," I’d just let my hair and beard grow wild. I’m not quite that “old” yet!

Read a big segment of “A Good Marriage” yesterday, it has really grabbed my attention.

That’s it for now, Sunday, June 21, 2020.
