Spring 2015 June 6 Saturday (Moving Day)

72 degrees this morning.

“Moving Day” is today.  We have actually been moving items for some time, today is when we actually move the furniture and move to our new house.  (Probably moving will continue for some time as we live out of boxes etc.)

I had planned to walk my normal walk one last time, but decided not to when I got up this morning and realized I was facing a full day of heavy physical activity after a lot of moving last night also.  Also, just a matter of using time to the best advantage.

As always, we  will wonder if we made the right decision or not, but it doesn’t really matter, since we will need to live with it  No major items, overall we feel like we made the best decision we could for us.

Internet access won’t be available for us until tomorrow (Sunday) and even then it will take time to hook up everything again and try to remember how to connect everything!

As I mentioned yesterday, this journal is likely to be erratic for awhile until we get our internet connected and a new routine is established.

Of course then we will have the problem of arranging furniture etc. in our new house.  Technically it is exactly the same size as our existing house, but of course it is arranged differently and may pose challenges that I’m sure we can work out.

The problem with moving (and sometimes a good thing) is that that it is never ending.  Like writing a report etc, it is never ending, since you can always change something (hopefully for the best) as you strive for perfection but never achieve it.

One big benefit, my current office, for some odd reason, does not have a ceiling fan or a cable tv/internet jack and also tends to get extremely warm or cold.  The new office does have this.  In some areas of the house we have more space, in some less space etc.

We will be without a refrigerator for several days, although we will have a “garage refrigerator” (doesn’t have a freezer, crisper etc.) that will have to do.

I”m not sure what I will do for my walk tomorrow morning, it will be a matter of exploring the area and seeing what works. In the near future,  I also will get my bicycle route figured out an look at area gym’s and the YMCA to see what may work.

I think owning a home gives you more a sense of being permanent, at least as permanent as you can be.  While renting was nice in the lot of ways, you always have this feeling impermanence, or at least I did,

Probably the major factor is simply saving on taxes and being in control of your environment. As an example, our current house has a driveway that is sinking and, in our opinion dangerous and an eyesore.  The owner wouldn’t fix it for some reason, which, while it is a nice house, made us feel like we were living in a substandard house.

Another example, while we appreciated the quick fix when the water heater went out, we were surprised when a much smaller water heater was installed as a replacement, with a “5 year guarantee”, which seemed to be the ultimate in cheapness.  Also, the new water heater ran out of hot water, not all the time, but enough to be a nuisance.

While our lease doesn’t expire yet, this is essentially the last day in this this house.  Signing off from this location.

That’s it of now, Saturday, June 6, 2015.

Spring 2015 June 5 Friday

75 degrees this morning, walk 44:42 degrees

The next several days, this Journal/Blog may be erratic since we will be moving.  There will be a time when we don’t have internet access, can’t find power cords or computers etc., along with all the action of moving.

Somehow, it doesn't seem like it is happening, that next week I will be sitting in the same chair after my walk writing my journal.

But I won’t.  It may be the same chair, but a different house.  I am looking forward to having a good back porch again (actually the back porch here wasn’t that bad, but I never used it.  I guess looking at the backs of five houses wasn’t all that attractive.

At our new house, we will have some trees and nature to look at again from out back yard.  Not near as good as the house in Lakeland, but not bad.

Actually I keep two journals, one I post and one is more of a “calendar” of what happened that day.  I keep it in “notes” and e-mail it to some e-mail addresses for retrieval if I want.

I used to keep a  strictly personal journal, but don’t anymore.

While we are personally affected, I feel that we have been affected by age discrimination again.  Our loan was supposed to be “sold” by the originating bank to Suntrust Bank.

Suddenly in my opinion, when they realized how old we are, they are trying to welch out of their deal with the originating bank. Sad.  I am getting all kinds of requests for additional information so they can justifying backing out.

Kudos to the originating bank, I am doing everything possible to avoid giving any reason for Suntrust to welch on their deal, but I expect Suntrust will find a way.

This weekend will be a “moving weekend”.  I am going to have a “office day” to get all my paperwork done and ready for a “Field Day” Monday, so if I don’t have internet access, I can still get a full day in the field.

We have “air cards” for our laptops, but it is slow and extremely unreliable.

We don’t actually have to be out of our house immediately, but we’d like to get everything done so we can ge the final cleanup completed etc.

It will be good to get the move over, so we can start developing a new routine.  Of course, it will take time to settle everything and get everything in the right place (which may actually never happen), but at least we are moved.

The weather is getting hot enough the swimming pool is looking good.

I went swimming the other day (briefly).  Katherine and her friend wanted to go swimming, so I watched them and went swimming for a brief period.  The water was very cold.

I thought about changing my work hours so I could swim at least several times a week (when it isn’t crowded), but since we are moving it would  not really be feasible.

Spring 2015 June 4 Thursday

73 degrees this morning.  45:03 minute walk.

Yesterday got up to at least 88 degrees at one point!

Perhaps Summer is finally here!.  Temperature got to the area of 88 Degrees yesterday and is suppose to continue to be relatively warm.

This is the last days of the current routine in this house, as we  get ready to move.  It is always a feeling like you feel the routine will continue even though you know it won’t.  I can imagine the new routine, but can’t really picture it, plus I know it will be different due to the different circumstances and people and events involved.

I really enjoyed my morning routine in Lakeland, and hoped I could continue the same routine here.  The situation was almost the the same, our house almost the exact same distance to a 24 hour gym.

However, there were several variables that completely changed my morning routine.  First, the paper was no longer delivered at 3:00 a.m. or so, but at 6:00 a.m.  I could have adjusted to simply reading the papers the next day while I rode the stationary cycle, and I may have done that if the other circumstances had been the same.

Second, while the distance was the same, the “last 1/2 mile-at max-“ was a sidewalk along a four-lane road and a poorly maintained sidewalk, so it was ok to walk to, but  somewhat of a risk to bike in the dark.  (I could have ridden on the road, but that seemed even riskier.

Another factor (before I started working) was I developed a routine of walking, riding my bike and then swimming as soon as the pool opened, so I managed to get a variety of exercise.

Also, I increased my walk to (at the time) about an hour, and also increased the bike ride to about 45 minutes, so I was getting adequate exercise.

After I started working, I fell into the routine of walking, and then heading for work.  When I started my home office, that saved me about a 45 minute commute, but I never really developed another routine of exercise, and ended up just walking about 45 min (and I also do sit-ups and weights).

Anyway, my morning routine (from about 3:00 am. to 7:30 a.m.) is extremely important to me, I try to maximize my efficiency and not waste any time, while providing for a post-exercise nap (around 28-38 minutes-I set an alarm, but usually wake before the alarm) and than a prei-work nap of around 11 minutes (I definitely set the alarm for this one and normally don’t wake until the alarm.  Then I sign in, grab another cup of coffee and the hectic work day begins.

Somehow, it all fits together for my life pattern, the exercise, journaling, paper reading and nap before 7:30 a.m. and then a high octane work day.   I usually also take a short nap after work to prepare for the rest of the day.

Somehow, it all provides separation and allows me to maximize my day (I think!).

Another dream Wednesday morning (this is my “post exercise” nap):

Dream i6-3-15 Wednesday

In a big store kept thinking of as a Braums (a regional ice cream store chain).  However it sold clothes, furniture etc. as well as a restaurant.

For some reason, I keep losing things, I’d forget my case or finding things, I found three forgotten iPads (or tablets) at the entrance.

I was talking to people, but I can’t recall who it was or who it represented.

I’d keep going outside and coming back in.

Don’t recall a lot about the setting except it was a large one story building and it sold a wide variety of items, in kind of a Wall Mart or even a thrift shop way.

Since Braums is a small (probably 5,000 ft max) combination fresh market convenient store and small quick meal (hamburgers etc.) and ice cream place,  (you order at the counter and pick up at the counter), that is strange.

Spring 2015 June 3 Wednesday (Summer Days, Routine, Change)

72 degrees this morning, Walk 38:13 minutes

This is the time of year I love (it is finally getting hot) for the long days and the long evenings and the hot sun (finally!)

On the other hand, there is a certain sadness about it, since the longest day of the year is just a short time away, and then the days get shorter as winter arrives again.

Of course, there is the enjoyment of Summer after June 21, and usually it is late December before the “hard” winter arrives and then you can count the days to the coming Spring.

This is one of those years when there almost wasn’t a Spring (at least if the Summer weather of the past two years continues). One thing I really liked about Memphis was the climate, while there was that long period of Spring when it was still cold, or uncomfortably cool, it didn’t last near as long as it does here.

I think the altitude had a lot to do with it, since Lakeland/Memphis was only a small amount over sea level, here it is a lot higher.

Routine.  I think one thing that I am really concerned about is falling into a “routine” and not being aware of it or being afraid to break out of it.

I don’t mean a routine I like and am aware of, but rather a routine where I don’t want to try new things or have such a structured routine that I get upset if the structure changes.

I have see people (I won’t name names), especially older men, who have fallen into a structure they get stressed if it changes.  (In all fairness, I have seen young men and women if all into this trap also).

It is easy to talk about “Change is inevitable”, and Change is good etc., it is another thing to really embrace change.

That came up in my mind his morning as the move comes and I altered my schedule my schedule slightly this morning.

Right now, I doubt that that  (falling into the trap of structure) is going to be a problem, but I want to avoid it after we move also.

Fortunately, my job is varied enough to avoid any structure.  It is a never ending tapestry  of new people to deal with, new situations, while maintaining a sense of familiarly.  By moving to new sections of the city, I have learned a lot about the city I never knew before.

I can remember when Kenneth Cooper first wrote “Aerobics” he recommended that you take at least one day a week off and/or, do a variety of exercise.

I don’t necessarily think I exercise hard enough to worry about that, I think of vigorous running etc. is when you have to take a day off for the muscles to recover.

Right now, I basically do the same thing every day, I will mix it up a little after I move.  As I mentioned, it is so easy to get into a structure trap where it is so comfortable to do the same thing every day, or at least it is “stressful”  (in a sense) to change the routine.

Short Dream yesterday:Dream 6 2-15

Dreamed in some kind of area where we were in a building  talking to someone in a cage who was telling stories

I was thinking how badly I wanted a  candy bar (a Butterfingers) and a Heresy Bar.

Occasionally the person talking would throw something out of the caged area, kind of like a tellers cage in a bank, the old type.

I saw several one-armed men and women around.

The setting was unknown, I didn’t have any sense of the setting to the dream.

Spring 2015 June 2 Tuesday

70 degrees this morning 45:11 minutes walking

June 2, this marks 11 months since we moved here and 9 months (to the day) on my job.  It hasn’t seemed that long and yet it has seemed like forever.  I’m not sorry, I really enjoy my job and we enjoy living here, it was just a significant change, which isn’t bad or good, it just is.

I certainly enjoy the job.  If I had tried, I couldn’t have  gotten a better job that I would enjoy more.

Moving continues.  I happened to read in the New York Times “In Defense of Clutter”, where the author says that possessions do have a place and she enjoys her books etc. and she isn’t going to be separated from them until she dies!

She went into detail about why you should keep possessions (she said she has moved many times) and not get ride of them.

Probably  not a good article for me to read right now!

In any event, we are in the process of final moving of what we can move until the furniture etc. is moved.  It is much more relaxing than an long distance move.

Just finished listening to “The Innovators” by Walker Isaacson (I still have to look it up each timeI).  It is wonderful book and really brings out some of the factors involved in our current culture and technology.

I wonder why he stopped with the establishment of Google, and not consider the iPhone, etc. I think the iPhone (and similar phones, tablets etc.) have a significant impact on our culture, maybe more even than the original computer, as far as a cultural thing.

Daily, I see groups of people, a large percentage looking at their phones.

Of course the cell phone really started it, but the “smart phone” really created a major cultural shift.

I can remember my amazement at the first Blackberry and how I could check my e-mail or news anytime, anyplace (and my dismay  when I dropped it into a puddle of water and it became just a pretty picture).

Actually dropping the phone also convinced me of the limits of technology.  After I returned it, the phone company apparently sold it on e-bay.  Several months later, I got call from Alaska from someone who had bought the phone and he was getting my phone calls!

Of course, the phone company didn’t want to believe me, but we finally convinced  them it was true.  I never did understand how that happened.

Anyway, I really realized the impact of “smart phones” when I saw homeless people with it, people of all ages, luddites strayed from their philosophy to get one, all incomes got one etc.
Daily, I see the “smart phone” places spring up to serve the smart phone needs of all income levels.

It is amazing.

I did finish the Innovators.  I have to apologize, of course Walter Isaacson did not write the book on the building of the Panama Canal, David McCullough did.  I made an error the other week when I said Walter Isaacson wrote it.

Busy field day yesterday, office day today.  I like the change from day to day.

Spring 2015 June 1 Monday (June 1, Instant Slums, Baseball Food, Exercise)

59  Degrees this morning 45:25 minutes walk.

June 1, 2015!!  It is hard to believe the year is almost 50% over already (well, 5/12’s or 41.66% over now!).

The time is simply speeding by, it seems every week and month goes faster.

Of course, I am enjoying every minute, but sometimes I want to say “time, slow down, you’re going too fast!”

(I think the song goes, “Slow down, you're going to fast, you have to make the moment last”, but I may be wrong.)

(I checked and it actually is “Slow Down, You’re going too fast, You’ve got to make the morning last”)

The term “Instant Slums” went through my mind during my walk this morning about this City allowing thousands of apartments to be built in this area without any provision for the increased traffic, park space or other needs of the thousands of additional residents.

I think the City was in such a rush to kow tow to the developer/builder/commercial/residential complex who are eager to make their millions or billions and get out of town (or worse yet, stay in town and continue the process.)

Actually, the area is probably fine for additional apartments, but to allow the large number of apartments without any provision for the increased traffic, park and other needs of the residents is, in my opinion,  gross negligence.

Ballgame yesterday.  I have to be careful, the “all the baseball food you can eat”  is an easy way to gain weight, although it is the only other meal, besides breakfast,  we eat that day.  Of course the food itself isn’t the most healthy (but it is good) and it is only when we go to ball game.  (Tickets include all the food and drinks you want.  Aliene can drink Pepsi’s and I can drink my coffee and water!)  It also includes the buffet and even service to the seats for traditional baseball food (hot dogs, chicken breast sandwiches, hamburgers, peanuts, giant pretzels, M & M’s, nachos and cheese,  crackerjacks, chicken fingers, cheese etc. along with a special “home” food, which has included BBQ, corn dogs and chicken fried steak. (I passed on the chicken fried steak, but the  corn dogs and BBQ were certainly good!)

We have learned to restrain ourselves.

The games have been very good and we are enjoying them.

I think it is funny when I hear that “everyone watches sports live”.  Actually we don’t watch anything live (well, I do watch CNBC live).  While we don’t watch a lot of sports, we like baseball (St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs), and college basketball and some college football.

However, we tape it and simply don’t watch (or watch knowing the results) the very few times we have learned a score before we watch the games.

Speaking of weight, as soon as e move, I am going to find a gym.  There are two possibilities , the YMCA (we will live about 2 1/2 miles from the best one in this area).  I like the Y, but it is open very restricted hours, at least for my preference.

There is a 24 hour gym within about a mile of our house, but it doesn’t have a swimming pool.

I expect I’ll take my normal walk and bike ride and then see which one fits my schedule best.  I really like the idea of being able to swim on a regular basis.

I was thinking this morning, my morning routine is bound to change, just as it did from Lakeland to here.  The early morning from 3:00 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. is an important part of my day.  A lot will depend on what time the daily newspapers are delivered (and if they are delivered!),  traffic to the nearby gyms, and how comfortable I feel walking/riding in the neighborhood in the early morning.

We shall see.

That’s it for now, Monday, June 1, 2015.

Spring 2015 May 31 Sunday

57  degrees this morning, 45:10 minutes walking

I am amazed that the cold weather continues.  I checked last year on this date at this time and it was 72 degrees!  I’m glad I didn’t pack my cold weather exercise wear!

Moving continues.  We are close to moving a large percentage of what we can move, with the final to be next week when a moving company will move what we haven’t moved (primarily furniture etc.) We enjoyed this house, but didn’t really enjoy renting

Yesterday seemed closer to Summer finally, but there was this cold wind blowing that changed the mood of the day.

I was pleased that the City apparently responded to my input and got the developers and builders to clean up the worst of the dirt on the street etc.  Supposedly they issued violation letters and they did clean up the streets and take the dirt stored on the street off!  I am amazed that the builders and developers care so little that they would allow it to happen in the first place.

They still have to repair and install their silt fence and drainage control, but at least it is a start.

Had a real scare, possibly one of the worst things that can happen, I called to transfer our Internet etc. and the agent had a hard time showing  cable/internet service available at our new house.

I had visions of life without internet (short  term is ok, I can just go to McDonalds or Starbucks for Internet connection).  It would have created real problems.
The Cable provider here provides much faster internet speeds than the Uverse does.  When we were in Lakeland, we kept waiting for Uverse, because Comcast was such a horrible company.  Here we had access to Uverse, but didn’t get it because the cable company was so much better and our horrible experience with ATT when we left Lakeland.

ATT actually shut off my home phone without my permission before we moved out (yes I always pay my bill on time!).  I could never get it turned on again, so I decided I was done with ATT.  (Actually I do have ATT wireless, but wouldn’t even consider have ATT for my home again.)

If cable service simply weren’t available, I would get Uverse, except Uverse isn’t available to the area we are moving to yet.

Long term living without internet would just be unacceptable.  Since my office is at home an includes a lot of  working with in internet connection , I would  have been dead in the water without an internet connection.

Actually, the work computer  can technically connect by air card to “3G”, but it is virtually worthless.

Anyway, there is an internet connection and it will be hooked up one day after we move in, thank goodness.  Our current house has some “dead spots” (well, low signal anyway) and I want to avoid that in our new house.

Listening to the book, I started thinking of the computers I have owned..  My very first computer was a    Commodore “Vic 20” followed by a “Commodore 64”.  I also bought one of the first laptops, a Radio Shack.  Unfortunately, I never did take to programming, so I am not rich and/or famous:)

My first actual PC, I bought on Veterans Day,( I bought   without a hard drive)!  I had a lot of fun with it and throughly  enjoyed using it.  I bought a 10 mg hard drive a short time later.

I upgraded as the years went buy, when, in 2006, I bought my first Apple Computer, a Mac G5.  A series of Apple computers followed after that to my current Macbook Air.

Actually I can’t even imagine being without an internet connection now (actually I can and I don’t like it).  It is almost as important as electricity!

Spring 2015 May 30 Saturday

64 degrees this morning.  44:34 minute walk.

I continue to be intrigued at the development of the internet, world wide web and computers while listening to “The Innovators” by Walter Isaacson.  (I have to look up how to spell his name every time).

Even the name “World Wide Web” and all of the basic actions we take for granted etc. are basically pure chance and related to early technology , which probably doesn’t have any relationship now.

After all the jokes, I was surprised to learn that Al Gore actually did have a major role in the development of the Internet.

He actually supported some major legislation that opened up the internet to individuals and commercial businesses, providing for the infrastructure for the current internet.

Wouldn’t say it wouldn’t have happened without him, but he did play a major role.

Interestingly, his father, also a U.S. Senator, was a major supporter of the U.S. Interstate system, which is also an infrastructure  improvement which has paid off as a major role in development.

I see literally hundreds (maybe thousands) of apartments being constructed in this area, without ANY provision for the increased traffic, need for parks, trails, sidewalks etc.

This city is simply unbelievable in it’s lack of planning and know towing to builders, developers and commercial interests and it’s complete lack of interest in the residents.

Yes, I know, if I don’t like it, move, but it isn’t always that simply.

I think it took me a while to realize how negligent the city is in it’s lack of planning.  I think it is just part of the the “system”.

The city does have it’s brilliant moments, but usually only if it benefits certain segments of the community, any benefit to the residents is nominal.

Moving continues.  The pace of the move has allowed us to get rid items we don’t use or need as will as plan the move and where furniture will go etc.  There may be several days when things are disorganized, but that is to be expected.

Of course there are always both pleasant and unpleasant surprises in any move and I’m sure this won’t be any different, in fact there have already been unpleasant and pleasant surprises.

We are basically moving many of the smaller items ourselves and then will have a mover move the furniture and large items etc.

Hopefully we can get the internet hooked up the day we move.  We are still waiting to hear about that.  Now, if I can just remember how to set up all the wi fi, computers, printers, scanners etc!

Spent an “office day” yesterday catching up on phone calls and paperwork and preparing for a “field day” Monday.  The new territory etc. has really presented a “learning experience” for me, as I encounter new situations.

It has actually been a lot of fun, and I have stayed busy.  There is almost an unlimited number of situations that can come up, so the position promises to continue to be interesting!

Spring 2015 May 29 Friday

67  Degrees this morning 44:31 minutes walking

Yesterday was warm, although it was overcast.  Rain south of us,with resulting flooding.

A lot of strong lightning and thunder yesterday morning, some rain.

The electricity went out for one of those “blips” that affect all the computers, clocks etc.

In a way, it is hard to believe we are so dependent on electricity. Literally everything depends  to some degree on electricity, especially computers and the internet.

While I don’t quite understand enough to discuss it, I wonder what it would be like if electricity was like computers, whereby each house or business was a generating plant and generated it’s own electrify and sent out electricity over the “electric net” when it generated electricity and could get electricity when the building needed electricity.

I don’t quite understand how it would work, but I think the concept is valid.  Not that it would necessarily be feasible or even desirable.

However, from the book I am listening to, we came unbelievably close to the similar pattern for he computer system, if they had decided to go with “dumb terminals” dependent on a central computer.

I don’t know how WiiFi, smart phones etc. would ever had been invented if that had become she pattern.

Of course, I have often thought it the wheel hadn’t been invented, we might be traveling on a cushion of air etc.

I think it is true with smart phones, some areas made the direct jump to smart phones, since there was no electricity infrastructure.

Another dream, this one was weird.  I realize dreams are like funny situations, some times you have to  be there (or actually have the dream) to realize what it was really like and “telling the story” doesn’t always communicate the idea.

Dream:
I was at some kind of meeting.

For some reason they had “rides” there like Ferris Wheels and some kind of other ride, maybe a basic roller coaster. People went up into the Ferris Wheels to discuss matters.

For some reason i climbed up to the top of he Ferris Wheel and set there, and some other people came up to an adjacent Ferris Wheel.

I dropped papers from the high places and also dropped clothes and my brief case.

I also threw down one of my  sandals, although I kept thinking that they cost $15 so I shouldn’t  do that.  (Similar to another dream except it  related to my house “flip flops”.

I thought I was up extremely high, but I dropped down at the end of the time,  (with the encouragement of the persons next to me) I was surprised it was only a short drop.

I went around to pick up my stuff and somehow  found it (basically t-shirts, my papers in a satchel etc). I  don’t recall if I found the scandal.

At the end, I started losing bird feed out of a bag and then I woke up.

This one was so weird, I won’t even try to analyze it

That’s it for today, Friday, May 29, 2015
