Winter 2015 January 9 Friday

27 degrees this morning (16 degrees wind chill), 45:38 minute walk, 5 earthquakes

It’s Friday!  Week went fast.

I really though I would have more time, but somehow events or projects seem to expand to beyond the time available.

I am always amazed at how much technology promises (and actually performs), but when it fails, all there is is excuses.  For example:

-Cable tv contines to promise more than it can deliver and gives weak excuses like “a software problem”.  Why can’t they fix it, or at least reduce the price and quit promising?

-Audiobooks (owned by Amazon of course), can’t deliver a book without missing sessions, getting sections mixed up etc. and all they do is apologize and say it is a “software” problem.  It keeps on happening though.

-Aliene’s Doctor wanted her to complete a questionnaire with numerous questions (50% probably information they don’t need).  We completed it and then then the program crashed, wasting all of our time spent on it.

And this was to help THEM (so they wouldn’t have to key it in), but I expect we won’t get any kind of rebate

I could go on and on.  Actually, with all of the hype about the “driverless car”, I remember seeing that hyped when I was a child and it still hasn’t developed.  On the other hand, with the problems of technology who would trust one?

I really don’t have any doubt that technology can accomplish everything it promises if someone really takes the time to get it done right, but then you still have the “weak link”, it is really only as good as the person delivering it or servicing it.

Of course, it is amazing what has been accomplished.  The fact that I can do what I am doing this morning (just writing this on a computer and posting it) is quite an accomplishment.

It is surprising to me that the “moon walk” was 45 years ago (if I figured that right), and we haven’t built on that  to any degree, although it could be argued that we have built a lot on what was learned from that project.

I still remember a teacher when I was in high school saying that no individual would invent anything important or become rich now, that it would all be done by corporations!  She would be amazed if she could see what happened!

Perhaps technology is like a lot of things (such as trips, etc.), maybe our expectations are so high that we will always be disappointed in the final product.

I think, regardless, it will be hard to deliver the final product, due to the inability to get adequate people to deliver, train and maintain the product or service.

Another factor is the absolute greed of some people and companies.

Anyway, I feel a lot of thoughts bubbling up on this, more than I can write right now

That’s it for now, Friday, January 9, 2015.
