Summer, 2013: June 15
This is the summer I will actually turn 66, an age I couldn't imagine not too many years ago.
Enjoying the weather and thinking about how to celebrate the "longest day of the year" (not really, because the longest day of the year also means the descent into winter! Or something like that.
Didn't get my Wall Street Journal for some reason this morning. I miss it when it doesn't come. It is a real blessing to be able to the the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times delivered to my door! (I only get the Times on Friday, Saturday and Sunday since I literally don't have time to read it during the week.).
My typical morning is to get up about 3 a.m., usually piddle for about 10 minutes, walking for 30 minutes, than bicycle to the gym, where I am on the stationary bike (really the newspapers!) for about 34 minutes, bicycle back, shower, take a 27 minute nap (why 27 minutes? I don't know either!). Then I work for about an hour and a half (reading, sending e-mails, updating things, writing memos I don't get time to do during the day etc.), than eat my breakfast of Oatmeal, blueberries, and (lately) and apple with peanut butter and then head to work!
Somehow it all works out and I love my routine. I also drink about 8 cups of coffee (as measured by Starbucks, which is about 3 real cups of coffee!)

Summer 2013 The Beginning and the End
This is the time of year that I love, the days are getting longer, hot weather is coming and on weekends and evenings I can enjoy the weather (barring rain or storms).
It is somewhat bittersweet each year to realize that at the height of Summer (June 21), the days start getting shorter and it is a sure thing that Winter is coming again! However I enjoy the summer while it is here.
We just got back from CMA Fest in Nashville last weekend. It is always fun and relatively inexpensive. We get to see the "legends" as well as newcomers and the established stars (such as Taylor Swift, Brad Palsy, Derick Bentley, Carrie Underwood, Zac Brown Band, Little Big Town, Kenny Rogers etc.
I always realize how courteous and friendly Memphis is when I go out of town.
We have been really busy, which is nice in a way, but it is difficult to keep up with everything. I still get up around 3 a.m. and walk and ride my bike etc.
I started a "written" journal in 1988 and now don't have a written journal with all of the electronic alternatives. I miss writing on paper, but not so much that I insist on writing in a paper journal!

Newspaper
Exercise, Newspaper, Coffee, Listen, Resolve Conflicts
That actually does describe my day. My morning exercise routine is extremely important to me. Almost as important is my daily newspapers (I actually get two Monday through Thursday, three on Friday and Saturday and two Sunday newspapers, not counting subscriptions). Coffee is also a big part of my early day.
Listening is probably one of the biggest parts of my job and is the essential part of it. Really listening, not just hearing.
As some know, my routine was disrupted when my newspapers started arriving at 5:00 a.m. or so instead of 3:30 a.m. or so.
I normally get up about 3:00 a.m. or so (no clock, I just wake up). I walk several miles and then bike to the gym where I ready my daily newspapers while I ride the stationary bike.
The late delivery of my newspapers severely disrupted by schedule since I need about an hour to answer e-mails and prepare my day before I go to work, plus I absolutely have to have my 27 minute nap before I go to work! Not getting the newspapers by 3:30 a.m. means I had to go to the gym and THEN read the newspapers after I got back from the gym, which didn't leave me time for the hour to prepare for my day at work.
Due to a wonderful person at the Commerical Appeal and my news carrier, he changed his delivery times and I now get my newspaper at 3:30 a.m again. It is hard to believe a small thing means so much, but I feel so much better now!
Nashville
Taking a walk downtown looking for a place to eat. Inspired by fiddle music, I entered the "Broadway on Second Street". They had food, so I ordered and listened to "Katie and Mark" play County Western music, at times with the fiddle playing.
Fiddle/violin music for some reason has always had a special attraction for me. My Mom told me that even when I was a child, I'd stop what I was doing and listen when I heard the violin or fiddle.
I remember attending a small festival in some small city in Kansas years ago (I forgot the name of it) and I watched a fiddle player and I literally got lost in the music. He noticed my attention and it was like we developed a special bond as he suddenly broke into one of the my favorites, "Orange Blossom Special" Chills went down my back as I felt myself riding on the music and the fiddler played directly to my attention.
Some time later, I say Jana Jay play fiddle at a Cowboy Hall of Fame festival. Again, the music moved me to the point that I started taking violin lessons. I bought many of her albums and to this day I listen, to her music and chills go down my back.
I practiced violin about 10 years (note, I never said I played it!), I finally quit due to some skin problem on my hand and time limitations.
Walking down Nashville streets have a special attraction for me as I hear the fiddle music and want to go in to listen. I listened to "Katie and Mark" for about an hour as I slowing finished my food. I found the servers at "Broadway on Second Street" especially attentive and nice.
I feel a little frustrated as I walk down the streets of Nashville, hearing the fiddle music. While I want to hear the fiddle music, since I don't drink alcoholic beverages for carbonated beverages, and I can only eat so much, my options are limited for listening. I found very few places offer anything else (such as coffee or bottled water), so I am limited. Maybe I can ask for a glass of water and give a big tip to listen!

Christmas 2012
Christmas Day 2012
This is one of those years where Christmas seems to arrive suddenly. Perhaps it is because the normal lull between Thanksgiving and Christmas did not seem to happen this year. It remained (and remains) busy.
I am amazed at how fast children grow, and I always notice it in Christmas pictures etc. I now understand when I was a child and adult relatives and friends would be surprised at how much we had grown! I literally see children grow between visits.
We are in OKC, awaiting a Christmas snow (a "White Christmas"). For Aliene and I, all of the family activities are done by late afternoon Christmas Eve (although this year was somewhat of an exception as we didn't get through until about 9 p.m.)
Christmas Day used to be a puzzlement as we realized all family activities were completed and we might as well go back home. However, we have come to enjoy the opportunity provided by a Christmas Day without any planned activities as such. This provides an opportunity to reflect and discuss that I have come to value rather than considering it a "wasted day" because I didn't accomplish anything.
Kali turned 13 during the year, Katherine is 10. I saw Angela (my daughter) become a different person acting on the stage, a part of her I was pleased to see and never knew existed before.
I celebrated my 65th birthday and I assume became officially "old" although, as many people note, "I don't feel that old", which I assume is someone presumptuous, since I have no idea how it is supposed to feel. I hope to work for a few more years (hopefully in Lakeland, a city I really love) and then I hope I can start a second career in an area I am slowly focusing on as the time approaches. I just hope I can maintain a fresh and innovative approach to my job and not allow myself to get into a behavioral rut.
A word here about Coffee! I no longer drink any kind of "pop" (as I called it when I was a child) after I learned that the affect of carbonated drinks did to my GERD. To lose weight I basically stopped eating bread and potatoes since Christmas 2011 (losing 45 lbs in the process), so I consider Coffee to be my "last vice", a "vice", I greatly enjoy. I probably have become somewhat of a "high maintenance" customer in restaurants by insisting on fresh, hot coffee. I see not reason to pay $2.50 (more or less) and get a lukewarm cup of old coffee. In fact, anymore when I order, I specifically ask for a "fresh" cup of coffee. I don't always get it, but at least then I feel I can complain!
I have come to judge restaurants on their coffee. For example, Steak n Shake, Firebirds, certainly Starbucks all have outstanding coffee. J. Alexanders coffee is basically always lukewarm (they make it and serve it out of "warming pots' each day that don't keep it warm), TGIFridays' coffee is literally undrinkable (I don't know why, but all Friday's have the same undrinkable coffee, so it's not the server-it takes like a particularity nasty instant coffee). Cracker Barrel varies, but is normally good, although not excellent. Other restaurants (such a Macaroni Grill), it seems three is an unwritten rule that you don't get refills on coffee although they have excellent coffee. Bonefish has excellent coffee and alos is reasonably good on refills.
I got back into bicycling this year. I always have bicycled some, but this year instead of driving to the gym, I bicycle, thus getting my bicycling in and also saving some gas and being environmentally positive. I also ride for an hour or more on weekends and nights I don't have meetings (last few weekends and evenings excepted due to rain or cold!), which I really enjoy.
Snow is forecast for today. I don't like snow or wind and is one reason I really like Lakeland. While it snows there, the snow is usually gone fast and high winds are rare.
A few Christmas's ago (I believe 3 years ago, how time passes!), it snowed 14 inches in Oklahoma City over Christmas. We were snowed in our hotel for 2 days and basically lived out of vending machines.
I hear sleet outside, which was the forecast, sleet and then snow Christmas Day, which means we will be snowed in for the day. It is now 6:19 a.m., Christmas Day, 2012. I think I"ll run down and see if any coffee is available!

OMG, I'm 65!, part 1
When I was a child, I remember how adults mentioned how the years sped by and I fully realize now what they meant! I have to admit, I don't consider 65 "old" anymore and the age I consider "old" has gotten older each year!
Years ago I thought I would be retired either at or before 65. Now, I can't imagine myself being retired and hope to work until at least 70, assuming I still enjoy my job and am relatively healthy.
Trying to decide about Medicare and all of the options. Since I am covered by the City of Lakeland group health insurance, I don't need it but realize the possible danger in not getting it now.
The Countdown to Age 65 has started. I'll see how I feel as the dreaded age approaches!

The last suits?
I have had to buy 2 suits, new belts, shirts, slacks etc. to the tune of a substantial amount of money. It is fun to find "new" "old" clothes that I saved for "when I lose weight" and it has actually happened, but I didn't save enough and I didn't realize how old they were.
The thought crossed my mind that this could be the last suit I will ever buy, considering my age. Although I hope to keep working for at least 6 more years, (and living for many more than that) I don't wear suits every day, so they could last for a considerable period of time. The slacks, shirts etc. probably (or should I say hopefully!) will be replaced since they will wear out, although I still occasionally wear my 40 year old cowboy boots, and some 30 year old shirts and coats!
I did pick some sizes that will allow me to lost more weight (my goal is another 20 lbs) and hopefully not have to replace everything!

Thoughts on Bull Frogs and aging
It also means it is the summer I will turn 65 years old. I never really thought 65 years old would feel like this (although I won't really know until my birthday and I actually tell someone I am 65 years old-I still haven't gotten used to telling people I'm over 50 years old!
Not that I regret turning 65 years old, it is just a fact. I just hope I can continue to enjoy life for as long as it is a quality life.
I am glad I have continued my exercise, reading and working. I walk approximately 1/2 hour every morning, then ride my bike (most mornings) and then go one to the gym (which is 1/2 mile away) and read the morning paper while I ride the stationary bike at a slow speed. I still enjoy reading a physical paper while I am at home, although I have gotten used to reading newspapers on the internet while I am traveling away from home.
Aliene and I started watching our "carbs" right after Christmas. Since the day after Christmas I have lost over 30 libs, which make me feel good. Also, I have "grown into" some clothes I had previously grown out of, which makes me feel good. Aliene has lost about 16 lbs, which is even better than me considering the relative weights.
While I enjoy all of the technology and the "social media" etc., I have found I don't write in my blog near as often for obvious reasons and I miss it.

What is especially good, as I lose weight, I come into a whole new wardrobe of clothes that I haven't been able to wear for years, but always kept because someday.... Maybe "someday" is finally here! I lost weight by what I call a "modified" low carb diet. I rarely eat potatoes or bread and avoid foods with high carbs, although I do continue to eat oatmeal and blueberries (my favorite breakfast), which is relatively high in carbs and I eat a lot of high carb fruit and vegetables. Although I haven't bothered to look through all of the details, I understand that the carbs in bread, potatoes and sugary foods are worse than the carbs in vegetables and fruit since they are a lot faster hitting your bloodstream.
Anyway, I think it is a eating pattern I can continue without any real problem.
I noticed I haven't been "blogging" much lately. I think it is partly because of the many other opportunities (that still take your time since as Facebook, Twitter etc. and partly because it has just really been busy.

Two Homeless Men in Starbucks
I had coffee with two homeless men in Starbucks tonight. Not really “had coffee”, but they were in Starbucks when I was. (They didn’t buy anything, but they did eat a sandwich they bought in and washed it down with what looked like gin, or maybe it was a bottle of water.)
They were quiet and courteous. They unloaded their possessions, actually enough to seriously impede their mobility, and, I couldn’t help but notice, quite nice luggage (actually gym type bags.)
Of course everyone carefully ignored them and they didn’t bother anyone, except to ask someone if it was supposed to rain.
It is rainy and cold (and most of all, windy) here (in Oklahoma City) and I suddenly thought how I don’t like rain and wind as an inconvenience, it is really important if you are homeless.
I couldn’t remember the last time I thought of a homeless person as other than someone I see walking down the street, asking for money at the intersections or asking me for money as I carefully avoided looking at him or her.
Actually, the last time I probably associated with homeless persons was when I was in college and working summers in Denver. I came from an extremely small town and probably had never been in a city as big as Denver. I came out to work at a summer job in a Samsonite Factory. (I can still do the moves I did on the assembly line.)
My Mom gave me a check to sustain myself until I got my first paycheck, and, of course, no one was about to cash a check from a city they had never heard of before!
I actually slept in the bus station and other areas for several days until the bank associated with Samsonite finally cashed the check and my parents sent me some more money! Actually, I never had any problems, although I kept my distance also.
I still probably won’t look at homeless people any differently and I still resent being asked for money. Years ago, I started adding a little extra on tips to servers etc., but I refuse to succumb to what I consider to be extortion of someone asking me for money on the street.
I decided a long time ago, I’d give a little extra to help working people, but not panhandlers. I realize probably a percentage actually really, really need the help, but I just don’t like being approached asking for money. It isn’t just Memphis, I’ve been approached on a regular basis in Lakeland at gas stations. Maybe I’m not thinking about it in Lakeland, so I look more like I might give, but I especially resent it when I am approached late at night, it is too much like a robbery attempt. I probably should give something just on the basis that I may be helping someone who really does need it, but I can’t bring myself to do it. I’m much rather continue adding a dollar or two the tips to people who work and are trying to help themselves.
It was an interesting experience and certainly gave me a more personal experience with the current group of homeless people (I have a feeling the ones I saw tonight were some of the “new” homeless, who may have had a good job, owned their own home and never thought they would be homeless, in the recent past. It is easy to look at them and see myself in their place and question my thoughts on this and my policy of not giving money to panhandlers.
As I am reminded, given an unlucky break here and there, it could just as easily be me.

37 years!
37 years ago (October 21, 1974), I walked into the Liberal, Kansas City Hall to start my first day of what has turned into a municipal career. The City Manager showed me my office (I was impressed I actually got my own office!) and advised me he wanted a grant for improvement of an area of town and to improve housing. (At the time, Liberal had a housing shortage).
The years since then have gone by in a blur. I think a major change has been that many decisions that in the early years I would have agonized over, I started to make almost without thinking, and my instincts and reading of peoples behavior have significantly increased to a point I find amazing (I also don’t say a lot about it). I think that must be one of the major benefits of experience.
Looking back, I find it is difficult to write about. I started working with grant programs for about eight years, when I assumed my first City Manager job, more of a change than you think it would be. My first few years as City Manager, I read and read about different technical aspects of a city, as well as leadership techniques etc. (Now that I think about it, I still do!).
I found most elected officials really are honest and hard working and their major interest is for the community as a whole, not personal interests. I actually saw more elected officials vote against their personal interest at times then I did vote for something that would benefit them.
The most dangerous elected official? The “single purpose” elected official whose only interest is the advancement of a personal idea, concept or group and with no interest in being fair to all parties.
Probably the biggest benefit I have had from my career is knowing and working with many of the persons who served their communities in either elected or appointed positions.
I like to say I played “City Manager” when I was a child and I developed cities with police and fire departments, public works, airfields etc. Of course I didn’t call it that but that is what I was doing.
I realized had found my career when I was asked at a Toastmasters meeting what I would do if I won the lottery or otherwise suddenly had enough money to not work. I thought about it and said I’d go to work the next day and continue to do what I loved.
I know there won’t be another 37 years. I do wish I could start again 37 years ago with what I know now!
I remember after several months I was standing in line in a movie theatre and as I looked around me, I realize that what I did for the city (little as it was) contributed to the daily happiness of the people, I actually felt a chill down my back and tears come to my eyes as I thought about how the City affects the daily lives of it’s residents.
And that is why I am still working for city government for 37 years and, other than wishing I had made better decisions at times (which is how I got experience), I don’t regret spending my career working for cities and I can’t imagine a better career than City Manager.

Fall of 2011
Fall of 2011
Summer of 2011 is over and the Fall has be gorgeous thus far, but I still miss Summer and I know that winter is coming. In all fairness, Winter isn’t that bad in Lakeland, but it still is cold and there are no leaves on the trees etc.
A while since I have written, probably one of the longest since I started keeping a written journal in the Summer of 1987. (Can it have been that long ago!?) I still keep a daily journal of my basic activities, but I don’t write my thoughts down on a daily basis.
I keep thinking I will start writing daily observations, but life gets in the way. I will make an attempt to jot some observations down (written on paper, not just in the computer) today.
I recently attended the International City Managers Conference, and I thought how a conference is something like life. You look forward to it, it gets here before you expect, and by the time you learn your way around, it is over (or almost over)!
The last few days have been beautiful.
Overall things are going well. Aliene had pneumonia recently, which with her condition is bad, since she can’t take antibiotics without some serious side effects. Then after she started feeling better again, her back and leg started hurting again. Same problem as with the pneumonia, she can’t take much of the pain medicine.
I am still walking in the morning, then an “outside” bike ride on my now trusty six year old Trek (it has been a super bike, although I don’t get anything but a mountain bike in the future) and then, something relatively new, I go over to the ATC (Around the Clock) gym and read the morning paper while I ride the stationary bike.
You would think I would start losing weight, but....my eating still is tempting!.
I am going to try to write more often and less wordy, so I’ll stop for now and post this.
