57 degrees this morning, no walk (rain coming in)

Obviously April 19, 1995 is on everyone’s memory who was here than as some lunatics blew up the Murrah Building.  21 years have gone by since then.  

As with most such events, I can picture exactly where I was at the time I learned about it and I can vividly remember many of the scenes after April 19.

I remember how it rained and rained almost like the earth was crying until Mothers Day, when the sun suddenly came out and everything was calm.  

I was surprised to see rain clouds this morning, I had thought the rain was out for some time!  Actually the rain thus far (around here anyway), has been the nice quiet slow rain that is probably best for the land, as far as trees , flowers, crops etc are concerned.

This state has a “right to farm” bill coming up for popular vote.  Of course all it is is protection for big business to operate without regulation, not any protection for the small farmer.  

It is hard to believe that people would believe something like our food should not have any regulation.  

Or worse yet, it could open up the inability to control people who want to grow pigs in their back yards in a crowded housing subdivision.  

Another attempt to benefit the few at the expense of the many by trickery and lies in an attempt to enrich themselves even more. 

To say farming is over-regulated in this state is a joke, just like oil and gas is over regulated.  In my opinion it needs more regulation.  

Th earthquakes are getting more frequent and more severe, although they seem to run in cycles as to where they happen.

I am amazed by the battery life of some of my Apple products.  The Shuffles which I figure are at least nine years old continue to hum along and my iPhone 3, long retired from service as a phone, still works fine as a device to listen to books and music.  

Still listening with interest (when I get a chance to walk) to “War and Peace”. Another example of the fact that no matter how many advancements there are or the passage of time, many human conditions and circumstances don’t change!

I believe the novel is set in the 1805 time frame.  I need to read up more on the actual time of the novel and also maybe even find a summary of the novel to help me in understanding it better asI listen.  

While I enjoy listening to books,you miss something by not reading the actual book, although audiobooks also have their advantages!

2016 Spring April 18 Monday

56 degrees this morning,  light mist, walk 49:13 minutes. 

Rain all day yesterday some very light mist during walk.  Thought about shorter walk, since avoiding puddles etc. and haven’t walked for three days, but decided that was a good reason to take the normal walk!

Looking at “password” apps.  I need to do something, it is a real pain trying to keep track of all of the passwords, since a list is hardly the way to do it!  

Making plans for travel, for the CMA Fest and the annual family reunion.  As I always say. I think I would enjoy  being a travel agent, I enjoy  planning trips so much.  

Not sure why it is so enjoyable, but I enjoyed it even before the internet, but I love it now, since I can research all of the “what if’s” and alternative possibilities.  

I’m not sure what is so enjoyable about it, but I enjoy it.

It soon will be the anniversary of our trip to China, and I remember how I spent almost 4 months researching and planning that trip (which was well worth it).  

Hopefully we will be able to return in the near future! I am looking forward to planning it!

Watching a tape of the “Chinese Grand Prix” in Shanghai, which makes me want to return for another visit!  

Not quite sure why I like watching Frormula One racing, maybe it is the way every races in a different country.  

Sent in our taxes last night.  We actually finished them Saturday and “e-filed” and, unfortunately since we owned money to both the Federal and State, we mailed in the checks yesterday.  

I plan on “planning” better this year.  While it r really doesn’t make any difference in the end, (the tax owed is the same), it is much nicer to get a refund, even if it is already our money!

As I have mentioned, I don’t mind paying my fair share, but when I see hedge fund and “activist” looters get off with paying little or no taxes because they “contribute” to the right people , I don’t feel good about it.  

Warm weather always seems to arrive so slowly and then suddenly it is here.  It isn’t here yet, that is sure, but at least it is warming up.  

As I mentioned previously, I have not seen near the number of “blooming” flowers, trees etc. that I normally do.

I am looking at our yard to determine how I can go about  wasting as little water as possible on grass and pl;ants etc.  

I don’t know enough about landscaping to know if we have “native” plants or not, but I’d like to have “native” plants which can adjust to the weather patterns not require a lot  of watering.   It is just such a waste to see all of the watering trying to make grass and plants that shouldn’t be  in this area flower and live in weather they are suitable for!

I love good landscaping etc., I just don’’t see why water should be  wasted so much on trying to make plants thrive which really don’t want to grow in this area!  

There are actually plenty of beautiful plants that are native and it seems that the time and effort in getting keeping non-native plants alive would be better spent in choosing appropriate native plants that don’t require continual watering.

2016 Spring April 17 Sunday

61 degrees this morning.  Rain/threat of rain, no walk.

There was a “100% chance” of rain this morning, so i decided not to take the chance and walk.  Of course, other than a brief shower, it hasn’t rained yet!  In actuality, the thunder and lightning would be enough to keep me from walking or being outside!

I have to take the weather predictions with some allowance for error.  Even seeing the rain clouds on the phone in “real time” doesn’t always mean it is going to rain. 

It seems they shouldn’t use “100% chance” if indeed there is a small chance (and there always is) that it won’t rain at that particular time.  

Obviously the weather forecasts are a lot more “predictable” that they used to be but they still aren’t perfect!

Finished income taxes yesterday, tried to see if I could “itemize”, but it just wasn’t there.  Next year it will be.  

I use “Turbotax” and it quite frankly, hasn’t kept up with other tax programs.  Probably what is most irritating is the way they try to sell you “upgrades” or other products frequently by trickery or trying to scare you.

As an example, my chances of an audit (since I  didn’t itemize) are near “0” % and they still were pushing their “audit protection” as I “needed” it even when their own figures showed I didn’t need it!  

Of courses one of the parts of the “”audit protection” was “fast help service”, which kind of told me their “normal” service must stink1

Actually, I had to use  their phone “help” service and it was excellent. The first time there was a  45 minute “wait” to talk with an “expert”, the second time I call, a very helpful and knowledgable persons answered my question. 

Also, for the State Income Tax, there was actually no way of finding out the cost until you actually paid for it!  Talk about underhanded and sneaky!

Anyway, it is done this year.   I promised myself I was going to keep detailed records and file them so I could just do my return next year, but….. dream on!

Speaking of sneaky I find many of the newspaper web sites have this silly question that you have to “answer a survey question” before you can proceed.  Even worse are the newspapers that have a headline (or numerous headlines) on Twitter etc. and all it is is an ad for a super expensive “subscription”.  

I assume the survey  is some way to prove the number of people accessing the site, or just an attempt to harass you into paying for access.  I either refuse to answer, of if I do answer, I just mark “undecided” or something like that.  

I used to like responding to requests for “how are we doing” surveys, until I realized they just view it a a marketing tool, they don’t really care what you think.  They just want to get your e-mail address etc so they can spam you with advertisements or probably sell the e-mail list.

Of course, unfortunately that hurts the business who really does want your feedback,so I still respond to some surveys where I feel like they really want my feedback.

Went out to get the newspapers, it is now actually raining, a  relatively soft, nice rain.  I don’t mind missing my walk occasionally, but I hate to miss it two days in a row or more!

64 degrees this morning. No walk (rain clouds almost here)  Probably won’t rain since i decided not to walk!

First baseball game of the season last night (the local AAA team).  Always a little cool until early May, although we dressed for it last night and it wasn’t too bad.  At least it wasn’t bad after the wind went down.

Glad the weekend is here.  Top priority this weekend will be finishing up taxes (like anyone else who hasn’t finished their tax returns yet).

As i mentioned previously, I actually started early (like I always do) and dropped it when I realized were going to owe money.  This weekend, we are just to make one last gasp chance that we can itemize and pay a little less.  

With a full year of house payments, property taxes etc., it won’t be a problem next year!  

I have always somewhat enjoyed doing the actual tax return, I don’t enjoy keeping the records and looking them up.  Fortunately Aliene is very good at that, so it works out well.

Tomorrow will mark two months in the house.  As always, it is amazing how fast time goes.  We have essentially moved in, although we still have a lot to do.  It is nice to have more storage space, although right now I am kind of looking at it and deciding how I am going to use it!  

I am trying to keep on “weeding” items and consciously trying not to purchase any more items.  I have a lot of “antique” stores on my work list and, while I enjoy looking at them, I have absolutely no desire to purchase anything!  

Some of the antique dealers tell me they “refresh” their inventory by keeping many items in their home and then bring them to the store to keep their inventory fresh and new. 

 I guess if you got used to it, it would be ok, but I like the idea of having the same pieces of furniture around for awhile.  

My newspapers now arrive, for the most part, much earlier than they did at the other house.  Different route and carrier.

I am thinking of starting a routine of bicycling to the YMCA (which is only about a 1.5 mile bicycle ride), which is nothing on a bicycle-well,not nothing, but since i need to get ready for it, but not a problem.  

I may start my old routine of riding my bike to the YMCA, reading the papers on the stationary bike and then riding back.  I would like to go swimming, but can’t figure out how I can go swimming and ride the bicycle back, unless there is a fast way to get dry enough to ride the back without getting a cold, especially in winter.  

In Lakeland, my newspapers came really early and the exercise place was open 24/7 (which I really miss), so i can’t work it out quite the same.  

A problem with the YMCA is their limited hours and the special activities they have that disrupt your regular exercise routines.  A paying member seems to be the lowest priority.  

An exercise routine becomes such a part of my life I need to be careful that I set it up, so that I can easily fit it in.  

My priorities in the morning are my walk, which is top priority and at least one nap before I start work.  Probably the weights are the next priority and then I need to fit my bike ride in, which, with the preparation required is a bit more complicated and then fitting swimming in. It may be easier to fit swimming in at noon.  

Going to be a rainy weekend, at lease that is the forecast. I hate to miss my exercise program on a weekend because I feel a little more relaxed about my morning schedule.

2016 Spring April 15 Friday

Friday, the end of the week and April 15, April is half over!  

I will be spending the weekend finishing up taxes, which aren’t due until Monday this year, so I have an extra weekend.

Actually I pretty well have them done, when I realized I was going to have to pay in this year, I just delayed it since there is no reason to send in the tax return and money early.

As I mentioned yesterday, I don’t mind paying my fair share, but the tax system really isn’t fair at all, especially when “business’ persons who are essentially thieves and loot companies even get big tax breaks yet!

Got our first utility bill in our new house and in our new city.  Apparently the city partially runs the city based on “profits” from their utilities, so we are looking a doing what we can to reduce electricity usage, putting in “electric eyes” to automatically turn off lights, looking at installing LED lights etc.  

We were also advised we might want to consider a more efficient air conditioning system, but the upfront cost is substantial.  

While there are a lot of things I really admire about this city, it  appears it also is run by the old style small town cliques who fund their pet projects which benefit the few a the expense of the many.   

Of course, I really admire  this city for their protection of residents and awareness of planning and somewhat environmental awareness regarding lights pollution and promotion of trees and recycling.  

I haven't gotten too involved in getting information and keeping up with our new City, but I will do more as we settle in etc. 

The Presidential campaign is heating un to a  climax, probably at the conventions.  It has been, and continues to be, a strange campaign and I expect will be the subject of many books etc. over the future years.

“War and Peace” continues to be interesting listen, at least for now, assuming I can keep all of the characters and situations etc.  

I don’t know if people ever actually lived like that in reality, but it is rather interesting. Anytime I real a book like that I wonder if it really represents reality at that time

Of course, historians say you should look at documents “at the time” to avoid the influences of “20 20 hindsight”, although I’d have to check on when he book was written to know if it was \contemporary  or   written after the fact.

Of course, as I look at current society, I am amazed at how similar society is and much of the behavior of the individuals are to the the society and characters in War and Peace so it seems to indicate some things will never change!

2016 Spring April 14 Thursday

Listening to “War and Peace” during my walk.  I have to admit I am somewhat surprised that I am enjoying it, although I expect that I will begin to lose track of the characters.  

One of the downsides of  audiobooks (at least for me) is that for novels, if there are a lot of characters, I can lose track of where and who they are.  

The story line of War and Peace is interesting, plus the characters bring some surprising insights.  

I expect I will need to sit down and read it sometime. 

I am beginning to realize the reason it is considered one of the greatest novels ever  written.  

Of course, I have only listened to about 1 hour and 45 minutes of a 62 hour book (about 47 hours at a pace of 1.25%, if I am figuring right.  

Aliene and I have been planning our trip to the CMA Fest this year.  We debated flying and came within a button click of purchasing tickets last night, when we again considered driving.  Normally we probably would fly, but we are going to schedule in visiting friends etc. also, so it may simply be more flexible to drive.  

The fare was actually reasonable, and I was able to work out a reasonable car rental, but the flexibility of driving our car (the hybrid, so the cost of gas isn’t really a problem) is also attractive on what is basically a short trip.  

My new weight program is going well, I am developing a routine.  I am aiming to repetitions and not worrying much about the weight I am lifting.  

I have found that attempting too heavy of a “lift” can injure you, but if I try too meany repetitions, I just don’t achieve it and minimize the  chances of getting hurt that way.

I have the boxing bag set up, but not the punching bag, hopefully get going this week.

I talked with a business yesterday that is the victim of “ransomware” on their computer system.  The people who do that need to be hunted down and prosecuted.  They create a lot of pain and suffering for the money they get.  

I have decided to start using VPN all the time and am in the process of strengthening all my passwords.  I already delete any e-emails with attached files etc., but realize I still could get caught.

I hadn’t been too worried, I have good backup (plus, thinking about it, my files aren’t worth much anyway!), however I understand that now they have “ransomware”  that actually attacks the backup, not the computer storage itself.  

Anyway, they cost the business a lot more than anything they can get out of it, and I really feel they need to have a way to  hunt them down and put them out of business.  

The local Police Department found some “skimmers” on gas pumps in the city and warned people about having their credit card numbers being stolen.  They named the gas stations (oddly enough almost all of them one brand, or maybe not so odd!) and several people noted there credit cars had had items charged that they didn’t charge.  

The thieves apparently steal the credit card information and somehow copy it to a “Visa” gift card and then use the gift card.  A real racket.  

The stations can actually almost totally prevent this by security means, so I am going to use the stations that have this security!

2016 Spring April 13 Wednesday

58 degrees this morning, rain, no walk

Rain this morning.  Actually can walk in a light rain on my current route, but it looked like much heavier rain was incoming.  

Sometimes I welcome the break from walking, sometimes I don’t.  When I don’t walk, I also take a break from weights  and use the time to catch up on other items.  

Thinking of the advancement of technology, in all aspects.  Computer programs have gotten much faster and better, computer connections more secure and faster etc.  

Even something like cable tv, we now can record on a DVR and play it back without the hassle of videotape etc.

i was thinking of how much different our lives would be if the Court had ruled that it was illegal to use videotape technology and tape tv shows etc. for personal use.

Of courses, technology advancements bring their own problems, but it is nice to have the benefits of the technology.

Fast internet  is probably a major “game changer”, actually it already has been.  

I am hoping that the “fast internet” promised by internet providers in this area will arrive. It may not benefit me a lot personally, but it will certainly benefit the area.

I am really concerned about the current business environment of “activist” investors and hedge funds who take over a  company, loot it by approving huge
dividends” with borrowed money, burden it with debt and then sell it all in the name of “best for the shareholder”.  

They are basically thieves and should be treated as such instead of allowed to accumulate funds on a tax advantaged basis to loot additional companies.  

Of course, they then use the ill-gotten money to buy influence and change laws so they can more easily loot more companies.  

Hopefully, like all excesses, it will be self correcting at some point.  

Although it falls into the category of something I can’t do anything about except watch in dismay as the crooks are allowed and even encouraged to loot companies and hope “what goes around comes around” and they will eventually be held accountable.    

Now that I am on the “other side” of city government, I realize how difficult it can be to follow what is happening in city government . 

Not that I didn’t realize how difficult it was when I was involved in City government.  When you have job, family, and other interests it is hard to get information even when the City tries to disseminate information, much less when attempts are made to discourage getting information to the public, usually by “insiders” who are profiting from the secrecy.

Anyway, no matter what I write in these posts, I am basically a positive person.  I really don’t dwell over all of this, although injustice always is something that I feel is worthwhile at least writing or commenting on.

Office day yesterday, Field Day today.  I always look forward to the Field Days, since they are usually interesting and I look forward to the Office Days as an opportunity to catch up from and plan the Field Days!

Tax day is Monday.  We will be making preparing our tax returns a priority!

2016 Spring April 12 2016 Tuesday

47 degrees this morning (Walk 47:23 minutes)

Yesterday “in the field”, I was  reminded of the importance of “communication” by all concerned.  Not in the normal sense of talking, but just each side (or all sides) keep communicating and letting others know what is going on. 

I noted that , a “failure to communicate” creates a large portion of the problems I end up trying to solve (and hopefully solving).  

With all the means of communication (e-mail, text, calling etc.) it seems strange that someone can’t find time (or the courtesy) to send a simple note, text, e-mail etc.!

It is a failure on both sides, people just not thinking what someone needs to know and soon it may balloon into a  huge problem.  

A a very nice, warm Sunday, suddenly it changed to almost cold last night and this morning.  

Signs of Summer, plans for the CMA Fest and the scheduling  of the  Courter Reunion this year.

I thought about it and decided I can drive across Kansas to Missouri without buying any gas, fill up in Missouri and make it out of Kansas without buying any gas.  One of the joy’s of owning a long-range hybrid.  (I can go over 600 miles on a tank of gas, although I don’t push it!)

This is my protest of the way Kansas has gone to the dogs to say the least, thanks to the Governor and state legislature exempting all of their rich buddies (and political contributors I am sure)  from taxes and piling up the taxes on the lower and middle income residents.  

Shame on the Governor and State Legislature.  

A fine example of how to be a failure  and destroy schools and local government  and taxing the poor for the benefit of the rich that this state seems intent on following.  

As I mentioned to someone recently, I used to be proud to be “from” Kansas.  Now I quickly say that I haven’t lived there for years and it “Kansas didn’t use to be that way”.  

When I lived there Kansas had a heart, now it is an embarrassment to admit I am “from” Kansas to say the least.

I just quickly say “I’m not like the current Governor and Legislature and Kansans aren’t really like that” and let it go at that.  

Hopefully they will vote with the ballot and kick the rascals out, but if they don’t at least Kansas will continue to the the worst example of what not to do for the nation.  

I decided I can justify eating while I am in Kansas (I thought about packing lunches so I wouldn’t spend any money supporting the failure of a governor and state legislature), but  I figure I will eat places where at least I will be benefiting some of the lowest paid people and the ones most negatively affected  by the policies of the state.

On another subject, my walking shoes have about arrived at the end of their useful life and I will be making what is a trivial but also a very important decision in the next week or so, the purchase of new walking shoes for my daily walk!

Not a trivial matter I consider I spend about 45 minutes a day in them pounding the pavement!  I use my walking shoes “only” for walking and then retire them for causal wear.  

Office day today, yesterday’s “Field Day” was interesting to say the least.  

Probably the most interesting was when a very small, sleepy dog suddenly seemed to jump two feet in the air and started after me!  I wasn’t all that worried, but it was certainly surprising to say the least.  It had been sleeping so quietly that it’s transformation was a surprise to say the least!

2016 Spring April 11 Monday

59 degrees this morning, no walk (rain)

Rain last night, storm wasn’t go bad here, high winds, hail etc. in other areas.  Spring is here!

Just thinking of how fleeting some things are.  In this case I was thinking of restaurants (or whatever)  that become a part of your life, where you may regularly eat once a week (or whatever) and then they go out of business.

In a way it is like they never existed, but you know they did.  The people who worked there, the people you saw there as “regulars” are elsewhere etc.  

However, in many cases people will talk for years about the restaurant.

Thinking about this because one of our favorite restaurants has shown somewhat of a decline in attendance and it got me thinking of how I would feel if it closed down.  

Nothing against chain restaurants etc. but they really aren’t the same as a locally owned and operated restaurant, as with any business.

Thinking back, I think restaurants become part of the fabric of a community, and a community is a living organism of sorts, and restaurants are part of that fabric.  When they shut down, they change the interactions of the community, a loss that people feel in their everyday life.  

More problems with Cox Cable again, this time of a technical nature.  They tend to over promise and under deliver, rather than vice versa.  I think it is a lot better if a business  under promises and over delivers . 

Tax deadline next week.  Still working on the tax return, we are right on the edge of being able to itemize or not itemize, since we only owned a house for half of the year.  

I don’t mind paying my fair share of taxes, but somehow I feel like I (and millions of similar people) are overpaying while many businesses and individuals are not.  

One of those things you just grit your teeth and realize you can’t really do anything about.  

Yesterday was a day where it actually felt “hot” in the afternoon, a welcome day for me.  I am so glad to feel Spring arriving!

I probably won’t be doing one of my favorite morning activities this summer, sitting out in the back yard reading the paper and writing this journal.  

I will probably enjoy the back yard in other ways, but it really isn’t suitable to my regular summer routine.

For one thing, my weight set is inside now.  My weight bench has been outside since about 2006 and so almost every morning I would be outside doing my setups and weights .

Also, very little of the back patio has a roof (a lack I don’t understand and at some point we hope to add a roof on the patio).  Although I sat a lot on the uncovered part of the patio, having a covered part for when it is raining etc. is also important.

Most important, while we have a nice back yard and don’t have houses “looming” over our back yard, there still is a lack or privacy.  I don’t want a high fence, but we do plan on planting some strategic trees to provide more privacy.  

It appears that was the original part of the addition, but I believe the trees in the small “greenway” in back of our house may have been killed by bad weather.  

By the way not that we have neighbors who are curious or anything, and I doubt if anyone really cares what I do  in the morning,  it is just the general “feeling” of a lack of privacy. 

Not a big deal, but it will be different, and sometimes different is good!  So far I have greatly enjoyed my area of the house where I  do my morning activities and I certainly enjoy it more in the winter, I don’t know how I will feel this summer, but I will see!

2016 Spring April 10 Sunday

Finished the book on philosophy this morning during my walk.  Looking forward to starting another book tomorrow morning.  

 I really think I will start “War and Peace” and see if I can listen to (and follow) the entire novel.  I might have to read something about it before I start listening to it.

Over 64 hours long, which will be the longest audiobook I have undertaken.  Hopefully I will like it,but if I don’t,  I’ll stop listening to it.  Life is simply too short to waste time, and I have a lot of audiobooks, podcasts etc. that I have waiting for me!

Getting totally disgusted with the actions of some businesses.  I really wonder about their ethics.  

As I noted before, obviously the big push for “ethics training” in the Universities and business schools in the 70’s and 80’s apparently just taught businesses and government workers  how to profit from being unethical, not how to practice true ethics.  Not true for everyone, but….

Just a few examples, Delta raising the price of the flights I expressed interest in before I could buy them, Amazon raising prices arbitrarily based on some membership they peddle or the time of day etc. without telling you, and of course, there are always the phone and cable companies, the ultimate  in hidden fees, fees they sneak on your bill etc.

Cox Cable is especially bad.  They send a five page bill they can’t even read themseleve  and, when challenged, in my opinion, they simply lie about their charges. 

As an example, when we moved, we were excitedly advised there were “no charges for moving the cable service” etc.  Of course, the first bill they double billed us and had $150 in “installation” charges” and some fees I had never heard of.  

Of course when I called, they took them off, but I have to wonder how many of these I miss or other people miss.  

Of course, when we decided to add an extension, we were told $50 and charged $75.  When I called she said “but they hooked up the tv also”.  I advised her they “forgot” to include the cable box, we had to go get that ourselves and install it and there was never mentioned there was a large for “hooking up the tv”, we were advised it was $50 for the entire situation.  

To add another attempt by Cox Cable, we paid a set amount (charged to our credit card separate from the bill) for “MLB Extra Innings” when I noted it was about 50:% more if you spread it over 4 months (something they don’t bother to tell you!).  

Of course on the first bill, I am charged a payment for “MLB Extra Innings”.  What more, I call to complain and am advised that is the way they handle it, my credit card wasn’t charged.  Of course, I check and find my credit card WAS charged!

If I did this kind of stuff, I’d be thrown in jail for theft!  They just laugh it off and profit from the people who don’t catch it!  Disgusting.

Of course, the State Attorney General is out spending money chasing ghosts and filling costly (paid by the state) political (in his eyes beneficial to him) lawsuits against the federal government instead of watching the chicanery of businesses in the state!  

I expect they contribute a nice political contribution to him each election!

What is so bad, this is considered the normal course of business for these companies, to add nuisance fees, “mistakes” in billing (always in favor of the company of course) etc!
